Tooth Extractions

Holding toothAt Booragoon Family Dental Centre, our friendly, experienced team can assist you with a broad range of dental needs. We want to ensure that every member of your family, from children to adults, show off a healthy smile that they’re proud of. If your teeth have been affected by trauma or decay, we have several services to help restore your smile.

Damaged teeth can make your self-confidence decrease and cause pain. You may even have to avoid chewing on one side of your mouth. If you have a problem in your tooth, it won’t get better on its own. One possible solution to your issue may be an extraction. A simple removal of your tooth can provide you relief and prevent further damage from occurring.

What to Expect

When you arrive, you’ll fill out some brief paperwork and then meet your dentist. You’ll have a chat so we can learn about you and what has brought you in. We need to thoroughly examine your teeth, which will give us an idea of what has happened and how best to address your problem. You’ll be given all possible options, detailing the pros and cons of each. We want to be sure there are no surprises, so we’ll walk you through each step of treatment.

We’ll go about your extraction as efficiently as possible, ensuring your comfort along the way. The aftercare we will recommend to you depends on the nature of your procedure – how many teeth have been removed and which teeth must be considered. Some people like to take the day of their extraction off work. For a simple extraction, a second day off work is usually not necessary.

At the first appointment, we typically give our emergency cases a round of antibiotics. You’ll receive your prescription for your antibiotics and be given instructions of how to take them.

We understand that each patient has specific wants and needs. Some prefer to have a tooth extracted. Others want to preserve their natural teeth at all costs. We will tailor your treatment to your preferences so that you’re in control of what happens. If there are any options other than an extraction, we’ll be sure to tell you about them.

Once your tooth has been extracted, we can provide a tooth replacement. This replacement will keep your smile natural-looking and healthy. The replacement option we offer include dental bridges. If you have multiple teeth extracted, dentures may be an option.

We provide routine extractions as well as wisdom teeth extractions in-house. If your wisdom teeth are beginning to grow in or you have a teen with concerns about their wisdom teeth, we recommend you bring them in so we can evaluate them. Some wisdom teeth will not need to be extracted. We must, however, check to be sure they don’t cause problems such as decay or crowding.

How do I know if I will need to have a wisdom teeth extraction?

The only way to know for certain is to come in for a consultation. At this appointment, your dentist will check the position of your wisdom teeth and whether they are likely to cause you problems.
If I need to have my wisdom teeth extracted, will I need to see a specialist?

We look at each patient on a case-by-case basis. If your wisdom teeth are severely impacted or extremely close to the major nerves of the jaw, we will refer you to a specialist. After your consultation, we can tell you whether we’re able to complete your procedure in-house.
How long will the extraction procedure take?

The length of your extraction will depend on a few factors. These include the placement of the tooth or teeth being extracted and the location of the teeth. For example, a wisdom tooth that is deeply impacted would take more time to extract than a single tooth toward the front of the mouth. We’ll let you know how long yours will take after we have assessed your teeth.
Is there certain times at which you schedule extraction procedures?

Yes. It’s best to book for Wednesdays or Saturdays, as Dentist Dr Elisabeth (Lisa) Staer is our go-to dentist for extractions. She’s here with us on those days. If you have an emergency, however, you will not need to wait for one of those days to be seen.
Will I need to take off work?

Whether you need to limit your normal activities will depend on the type of extraction you have had. We will discuss what is appropriate for you or whether you need to take off work at your initial consultation.
